Meet the iCub3: a humanoid robot designed for teleoperation at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT). It stands 1.25m tall, weighing 52kg. It has an aluminum alloy construction with plastic covers to partially cover the electronics. This robot has 63cm long legs and arms that are 56cm long from the shoulder.

The iCub3 robot has 54 degrees of freedom. It has hands with tendon driven joints, moved by 9 motors. The robot head is powered by a Core i7 processor with 8 GB RAM, running Ubuntu. The above video shows it in action.

Teleoperating robots from a safe distance is much easier with the Shadow Teleoperation System. It comes with 5-finger dexterous hands that can mimic the operator’s motions. The fingers, thumbs, and wrists are fully actuated. This system has 20 degrees of freedom and 129 sensors.

In the past few years, we have covered a bunch of wearable devices that let users control robots and drones with hand gestures. UC Berkley Researches have come up with a new device with wearable biosensors that relies on AI software to recognize gestures a person intends to make based on electrical signal patterns in the forearm. Conductive hydrogel is then applied to each of the 64 electrodes.

The user has to perform each gesture once for machine training. This wearable can be used to control robots and prosthetic arms. Pretty neat, don’t you think?
