Prosthetic legs are getting more advanced all the time. Plenty of researchers are working to make them more comfortable for their users. Biomechatronics researcher Roman Stolyarov has developed a terrain-adaptive control system for robotic leg prostheses that helps people with amputees get mobile and walk seamlessly with smooth transition between foot positions.

As he explains:

I developed a way to control a robotic prosthesis such that it allows the user to walk more naturally across different ground terrains. Besides increasing mobility and comfort, this control system also makes walking more symmetrical, decreases the risk of falling, and diminishes impacts on biological joints.

As the researchers explain:

Chiu, Voloshina and Collins thought, might be a tripod with a rear-facing heel and two forward-facing toes. Outfitted with position sensors and motors, the foot could adjust its orientation to respond to varying terrain, much as someone with an intact foot could move their toes and flex their ankles to compensate while walking over rough ground.
