Prosthetic legs are getting more advanced all the time. Plenty of researchers are working to make them more comfortable for their users. Biomechatronics researcher Roman Stolyarov has developed a terrain-adaptive control system for robotic leg prostheses that helps people with amputees get mobile and walk seamlessly with smooth transition between foot positions.

As he explains:

I developed a way to control a robotic prosthesis such that it allows the user to walk more naturally across different ground terrains. Besides increasing mobility and comfort, this control system also makes walking more symmetrical, decreases the risk of falling, and diminishes impacts on biological joints.

These guys are also working on a knee exoskeleton for children with cerebral palsy, a hip exoskeleton for stroke victims, and an ankle device for aging adults that restores spring to their step.

Prosthetic limbs get more advanced all the time. Stanford Engineers have developed a more stable prosthetic foot that can handle challenging terrain. The tripod foot responds to rough terrain by “actively shifting pressure between three different contact points.”

As the researchers explain:

Chiu, Voloshina and Collins thought, might be a tripod with a rear-facing heel and two forward-facing toes. Outfitted with position sensors and motors, the foot could adjust its orientation to respond to varying terrain, much as someone with an intact foot could move their toes and flex their ankles to compensate while walking over rough ground.

Growing up without a hand can pose many challenges. There are plenty of advanced prosthetic arms on the market that can make life easier for people but they are not cheap. Bolivian teen Leonardo Viscarra, who grew up without his left hand, has managed to design and build his own prosthesis using a 3D printer. The whole project cost less than $100.
